2002.10.05 Ambassador Theatre, Dublin  - Re-master

Lineage: Unknown SBD
Quality/Performance: 100/100

There is nothing I can fault about this concert, everything is just wonderful. It is quite an exceptional stand out concert  because of the drums and the stereo field. The drums are just...epic. Perhaps the best Ive heard on any of these recordings! and if you listen closely during parts of Von you actually hear different drums on different ears, which in quite extraordinary on a live non-commercial recording. I didn't do much work on this one, if anything I had to calm it all down! Its difficult to say if this 'the' best live recording of Sigur Rós but I'd say its easily within the top 5. Couple of interesting historical points, the intro is the start of Starálfur blending into Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása and I think this may be the first time that Jónsi sings the whole of the end of Vaka out loud (it began as quite a subdued end) It sounds like he steps back from the mic, almost as if he's testing it out? Later as it developed Jónsi really belts out Vaka at the end. Seeing him do this  :)
You can see what I mean here: @5.20 onwards (never fails to give me goosebumps)

  4. Jon, this is an exceptional recording, I can't believe how the drums particularly and all the other sounds dance around my ears, even with average headphones. There's a tiny bit of distortion and a few glitches on Vaka, probably as the taper is adjusting his levels, but otherwise it is as close to perfection as I could imagine. So many highlights, and Von is sent from heaven.

Out of the two night's recordings I'm going with this one as on the recording from the 6th there's a few very minor faults/distractions - a drop in levels during Ny Batterí, a bum note from Kjartan in Samskeyti, a strangulated wobble from Jónsi in Salka, haha, and the vocals being a bit too prominent in the mix during Von. But I'm being hyper-critical here 'cos I can only fit one of 'em on my iPod, so one had to go! (Nice extra in Olsen Olsen though).

Thanks for everything, as always x
